Hi, it’s Amy here today to share a seasonal quilt that I am calling my Spooktacular Starburst Quilt.  I used Spooktacular by Maude Asbury for Blend Fabrics along with Kona Curry solid (a perfect match I must add!).

To make this quilt, I cut all the hexagons using a Sizzix Pro Die, a hexagon with 5″ long sides. I cut the hexagons out of the pumpkin print, bat print, bottle print, and diamond pattern. I then cut all the triangles using a pattern I drafted that you can download here.

When cutting the triangles, I found it helpful to put a loop of washi tape on the back to keep my pattern from shifting while I cut.  Had I thought of it at the time, I could have used ThermOWeb’s PeelnStick Ruler Tape!  Keep that in mind…it’s another good use for the tape!

I arranged my pieces on a design wall until I was happy with the arrangement.  Here I used a black solid as a place holder while I was waiting for the Curry to come in the mail.

To sew, you begin with the top row and assemble the quilt row by row.  There are no Y seams!

Simply attach the triangles to the hexagons,

Then flip the hexie/triangle sections right side together matching that one seam and stitch where I drew the arrows above.

When the quilt top is done, piece together a backing and then make a quilt sandwich using Therm O Web StitchnSew Fleece sew-in fleece for batting. This quilt took two packages of the fleece joined together with the HeatnBond® batting tape at the center.

I decided to quilt my quilt with a starburst all over pattern found here. I wanted to keep the jagged edges because I thought that they looked “spooky” so I cut my Curry binding on the bias.

I’m ready for Halloween now!

This is a super fun quilt and has other possibilities as well with focus fabric.

Love quilts. Use them on all of the beds. This one is darling – since it’s related to the holidays

  1. […] I cut the fabric for the quilt using the Sizzix Pro Hexagon Die with 5″ sides. It shows off the large scale prints nicely. I cut the triangles with a template I drafted and assembled the top without Y seams. It actually sewed together quite quickly! The directions for assembling the quilt top can be found here. […]
