choose happy cover

Hey!  It’s Amanda from Jedi Craft Girl!!  I love hanging cheery items in my home.  When I look at them I feel all warm and smily 🙂  This AMAZING fabric line from Pat Sloan screams HAPPY and CHEERFUL and SMILY!!!!  I knew I wanted it hanging in my home.  I came up with this fun wall hanging/mini quilt.  It’s the perfect size for a sewing room, kitchen, or any room that needs a little happy.  Here’s how you can make one:

Supplies:

1/2 yard white fabric
16 charm squares or 5″ squares of a variety of prints
1/4 yard gray fabric for inner border
1/4 yard red fabric
1/2 yard floral for outer border
1/2 yard binding
1 yard backing
1/4 yard navy for letters

fat quarter or 1/4 yard for flower appliqué

Heat n Bond®  Lite EZ print sheets
Spray n Bond® basting spray

CUT

(16) charm squares or 5″ squares of a variety of prints
(16) 5″ squares solid white
9″ x 19″ solid white
(2) 1.75″ x 22″ red strips
(2) 2″ x 9″ red strips
(3) 2″ x WOF Gray strips, inner border
(3) 3.5″ x WOF floral strips, outer border

Sew the Pinwheel blocks:

Place a patterned 5″ square and a white 5″ square right sides together.  Sew 1/4″ all the way around the square as pictured below:

Next, cut the square set in half diagonally, both ways:

Heat set the seams then press toward the dark.  Trim off the little tagschoose happy quilt 5

Lay out 4 half square triangles to form the pinwheel.

Place right sides together, match seams, pin and sew.  Press seams open. Make 16 of these.

Lay the pinwheels out around the center rectangle.

Sew 6 pinwheels together for the top and 6 together for the bottom.  Then sew 2 together for each side.  Sew the sets of 2 pinwheels to the sides of the rectangle.  Press.  Then sew the top and bottom pinwheel strip on.  Press.

When in doubt, have your cat check your quilt math 🙂

I find it easier to not measure the gray strips and sew the gray strips to the sides, press, then square up.  Sew the gray strips to the top and bottom, press, and square up.  Follow this same technique to add the 3.5″ outer border, only sew the top and bottom first to get the most out of the fabric strip.

I appliquer the letters on last because I was making this up as I went along.  You can totally appliqué the letters on the white center rectangle before adding the borders.  Print the letters out in reverse on the Heat n Bond® EZ Print sheets.  Press them to the wrong side of the navy fabric.  Cut out each letter (ugh) and then position and press.  You can add the flower behind the letters.  Print out the flower in the same way.choose happy applique

For the quilting, I always use Spray n Bond® to baste my quilts.  It saves me so much time not having to stop to take out pins.  I actually enjoy quilting now!  I quilted a pebble pattern in the center rectangle.  The rest of the quilt has loop-de-loos.  Add binding, I always hand sew mine 🙂  It’s the only time I get to watch TV!!!

I can’t get the flower pattern. When I click on that link I get the letters again. I could draw my own but my flowers never look like flowers.
    Thanks!
