nautical banner

AHOY!!! It’s Amanda from Jedi Craft Girl!  I am loving all thing Nautical!  Everyday I leave the house looking like a sailor – my kids all make fun of me!  This banner features Riley Blake Designs nautical banner panel which is quilted and embellished.  The triangles are paired with a flag shape and anchor appliqué using Deco Foils.  Enough chatting – let’s get started –

Supplies:

Riley Blake Designs banner panal or red white and blue patterned fabric
3/4 yard backing fabric
cotton batting
iCraft® Deco Foil™  – Silver, Red, Silver Star and Ocean Blue
Natural canvas
Navy fringe trim
Anchor pattern, click HERE
Spray n Bond®
Scraps of ribbon, lace, ric rac, pom poms and any trim you can round up!

Part 1 – Canvas Anchor Flags

Begin by cutting (16) canvas rectangles in 5.5″ x 6″.  Fold the rectangles in half and cut a diagonal line by angling the ruler from the corner to the 1.5″ mark:

This makes perfect points.

Print the anchor pattern on the HeatnBond® EZ print sheets.  Cut the anchors apart, very close to the pattern lines, but not on the lines.  You need 16 anchors.

Position the anchor toward the bottom of the flag, leaving room for the trim at the top.

Part 2 – Quilted Banner

The Riley Blake Banner panel comes printed with all the triangles in different patterns – it’s brilliant!  Use Spray n Bond® Basting Spray to spray baste the panel to the cotton batting and then to the backing fabric – just like you are making a quilt.  Quilt as desired.  Of course you can just cut the triangles without quilting and you can use fabric of your choice.  There are 20 triangles.

I quilted loop-de-loos all over the panel.  After cutting along the triangle lines, top stitch 1/8″ in from the edge to catch the quilting threads and prevent the quilting from unraveling.

Now comes the fun part.  Run around your house and gather every bit of ribbon, trim, lace, etc. in red, white, blue, gray, and silver.  I even ruffled a few pieces of fabric. Use Spray n Bond® to position the trim in place and top stitch on the triangles.  This takes a while – I didn’t want any of mine to be the same.

Once all the triangles are embellished to your liking, lay the flags and the triangles out how you want them.  Sew them together using fringe trim.  You can also use ric rac, lace, rope, ribbon, etc.

Here are a few pictures so you get an idea of all the different trim combinations.  riley blake nautical banner deco foils 105

I love how the foils bring a sparkly element to the banner.riley blake nautical banner deco foils 17

This makes a long banner.  I actually made two separate ones so I can have them in several places.
