Hi, Everyone! My name is Jessica Dayon and I am going to share how I make really easy throw pillows.

Throw pillows are a really easy way to spruce up or decorate a room.  I try to have a variety for each season/holiday to help make a room look festive.  I addition to the pieced or appliqué throw pillows that I make, I like to have a few really simple ones also.  They are easy, quick, and fun to make.  Today we will be making a Christmas themed one.  Let’s get started!

EASY THROW CHRISTMAS PILLOW

This pillow finishes at 18″ x 18″

MATERIALS

1 fat quarter for the front of the pillow

1 fat quarter for binding

1 fat quarter fabric for the backing

21.5″ zipper

Heat N Bond No Sew Hem Adhesive, 3/8″

18″ x 18″ pillow form

PILLOW INSTRUCTIONS

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS

Read through the instructions before beginning
All seams are sewn with ¼” seam allowance unless noted
RST means right sides together
WOF means Width of Fabric

CUTTING

From the fabric for the pillow front, cut 1- 18″ x 18″ square

From the fabric for the pillow back, cut 2- 10″ x 18″ rectangles and 2- 1″ x 5″ pieces

From the binding fabric, cut 4- 2.5″ x 42″ strips

PILLOW ASSEMBLY

Make the zippered pillow back.

Take the 2- 1″ x 5″ pieces and press a 1/4″ seam on each of the 1″ ends. Then fold each piece in half, lengthwise, and press.

You’ll need to roughly measure a bit here.  Lay out one pillow back piece.  Lay out the zipper above it.  You will be sewing each 1″ piece onto the zipper at the pressed, 1/4″ end sides.  So you need to determine exactly where to sew them onto the zipper.  Measure so you have about 1″- 1 1/2″ of fabric on each end of the zipper.  Trim away the zipper that is beyond the pillow sides.

Open the 1″ piece of fabric up, slip the zipper end inside, and then sew the 1″ pieces to end of the zipper.

Cut the 1″ piece of fabric on the fold so it opens up.  Cut away the excess zipper.

Repeat these steps on the other side of the zipper.

Flip the zipper over, right side down onto the bottom fabric rectangle (the fabric stays right side up).  Sew the zipper onto the lower pillow back rectangle.

Lay the remaining fabric back rectangle right side up on your workspace.  Lay the zipper/fabric, right side down aligning the top edge of the fabric with the top edge of the zipper.  Sew together.

Press, topstitch very close to the edge of the fabric but each side of the zipper.  Trim the back to measure 18″ x 18″ square.  Set aside.

Join the 4 strips of binding together to make one continuous strip.  Press in half widthwise.

Place the pillow back with the wrong side up then put the pillow top on top of it with the wrong side down (and right side facing up).  Pin them together.

Sew the binding on to the front of the pillow.  When you are attaching your binding, you are also sewing the pillow layers together.  Remove the pins.

Flip the pillow over.  To secure the binding down, use the hem tape.  Measure a length of hem tape and adhere it to the inside edge of the binding and down to the pillow back.  Repeat all the way around.

Finished!  You made a really simple throw pillow!  With this pattern, you can make so many different, easy pillows that will really make a room feel festive and cozy and just rotate the covers out as each season changes to the next.
