Mix It Up MondayHello, it’s Gracie Chavez and today for Mix It Up Monday I have once again a different background technique to show you using Deco Foil™ and Rebekah Meier Designs Mixed Media Art Paper and Medium for Therm O Web. I’ve always wondered what would happen if I poured adhesive to a gel press and try to monoprint a background with foil and other textures… Of course, that would most likely ruin the gel press, so I came up with a technique that will give your backgrounds a faux foil monoprint look for a unique, artistic finish.

Foil Monoprinted Backgrounds with Deco Foil and Rebekah Meier Designs

To begin, you will need to cut a quarter of the new Rebekah Meier Designs Mixed Media Art Paper. This Art Paper is pretty much a light canvas sheet with adhesive on the back. It holds layers and layers of medium very well and that will be our base for mono printing.

step0

All you need to do to is peel off the backing from the piece of art paper, adhere it to a white cardstock (to create a thicker base) and that’s it! So let’s start monoprinting…

Step 1. Add drops of tempera paints in different colors on your gel printing plate.
Step 2. Spread the paint with a small brayer.
Step 3. Place a stencil on the gel plate.
Step 4. Place the Art Paper facing down on the gel plate and burnish it with your fingers to transfer the paint.

steps1-4

Repeat steps 1 through 4 as many times as desired until you get the result your looking for. Here is how my monoprinted backgrounds turned out…

step5

Now comes the fun part! Let’s create a foil monoprinted effect on these backgrounds…

Step 5. Place the stencil used before on the background. Try to match the monoprint as best as possible.
Step 6. Use a knife palette to apply Rebekah Meier Designs Mixed Media Medium on some parts of the background, trying to create a distressed look.
(Wash your stencil and palette knife right away.)
Step 7. While the the medium is still wet pour glitter and mica fragments on some areas. (Again, do not cover the entire medium with them.)
Step 8. Once the medium is entirely dry (clear and tacky) place a sheet of Deco Foil and burnish with your fingers to transfer the foil.

steps5-8

Peel off the Deco Foil sheet to reveal your Faux Foil Monoprinted background. The effect is incredible… So very artistic and unique! And, it does look as if it was monoprinted with foil… The texture that the mix of glitter, mica and foil gives this background looks beautiful especially with the choice of colors in this particular example.

step10These backgrounds are beatiful as they are, but why not finish them off and make some cards?

Make Cards without covering your Monoprinted Backgrounds

Step 9. Use a laser printer to print a digital stamp sentiment on vellum. Cut them as banners and run them through a Laminator with a Gina K. Designs Fancy Foil Sheet in Turquoise Sea

Step 10. Fold the top of the sentiment banner and attach it to the back of the background using Memory Tape Runner XL™. (Do not attach the bottom of the banner to the front so it can be lifted by the recipient if they want to see -and touch- the entire background.)

steps9-10

Step 11. All there is left to do now is attach the backgrounds to a white card base and you’re done!

step10c

The possibilities are endless with this technique since you have so many foil, stencil and paint color options that you can combine. These would look amazing in teal and blues or even metallic hues… Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
