Hi Therm O Web friends, Nicole here from Modern Handcraft with a tutorial for your little one’s – The Laminated Letters Placemat.

You can customize this however you like – with shapes, a name, numbers or letters. I am currently teaching my son the alphabet so I thought this project would be a perfect way to make learning fun while having a snack or playing with play-doh.

The iron-on vinyl makes wiping down so easy, and allows playing with play-doh on your kitchen table a little less messy.

Materials needed:

Step 1:

Begin by downloading the attached pdf pattern containing the alphabet. You may choose to use your own font, just make sure to reverse your letters. You can easily print this pdf pattern on your EZ Print Lite Heat N Bond® sheets or print out the pattern on regular paper and trace onto a roll of Heat N Bond®.

  • Cut your letters out and place on desired fabric color – make sure that you iron the reversed letters to the back of your fabric.
  • Carefully cut around your letter lines and set aside for arranging on your placemat top.

Step 2:

  • Arrange your cut out letters on your placemat top. It is easiest to do this on your ironing board top so the letters do not shift moving from your cutting mat to your board.

  • Peel your backing off of each letter and place back in position.

  • Carefully iron down your letters making sure to set the iron directly on top to keep the letters from shifting.

  • Following the directions on the package – medium heat / no steam, iron on your vinyl using the provided protective paper (make sure to not throw this away, you will use the paper again). Wait to cool before flipping over to iron the back.

Step 4:

  • Layer your No Sew Fleece, Backing and laminated top (facing each other). Use binder clips around the edges to hold in place while sewing.

  • Sew around the edges using a 1/2″ seam allowance, making sure to leave a 6 inch opening to turn the placemat right side out.

  • Once turning right side out, using the protective paper, iron over your placemat again. It will be very wrinkly after turning right side out – this step will be necessary.

  • At your machine again top stitch around the edges closing up the 6 inch hole at the bottom.
