Ho, Ho, Ho!  Its Jen Belnap from The Smitten Chicken.  Today I get to share a super fun project for the Holidays!  I always love a fun table display for the holidays.  But I had no table topper!  So I came up with this cute ‘Ho Ho Ho’ table topper.  This quilt was so much fun to make.  Do you want to make one too?

Quilted Dresen Table Topper

Quilted Dresden Table Topper

Dresden Table Topper Supplies:

1 charm pack (plus 2- 5 inch squares)

Sizzix Bigz L Die- Tumbler

HeatnBond Lite Fusible Adhesive

1 fat quarter

27 1/4″ square background fabric

Batting fabric

Backing fabric

SpraynBond Basting Spray

1/2 yard binding fabric

Dresden Table Topper Instructions:

I picked one my favorite Christmas lines.  It is Swell Christmas by Urban Chicks for Moda Fabrics.  The Santa’s in it are so cute!  Plus there is pink!  I love adding non-traditional colors to my holiday decor.

Pick out your favorite 16 charms.  Cut them out with the Sizzix Bigz L Die-Tumbler.  These are used to make the dresden in the center of the quilt.

Next, fold the tumbler in half.  Finger press it to create a crease.  Then sew 1/4″ seam down the larger side.

After you sew the edge, trim the corner off.  This will reduce the bulk in the dresdens.

Open up the dresden blade.  Match the point of the dresden to the center where you finger pressed.  Sew together all 16 dresden blades into a circle.  Once it is sewed together, press under 1/4″ on the straight edge.  This will finish off the raw edges.

Cut your background to 27 1/4″ square.  Fold the background in half and in half again so its into fourths.  Then press.  This will mark the center of the background fabric.  Line up and center the dresden.  Pin into place.  Stitch.  I used a blanket stitch to secure the dresden.

Now its time to add the border!  Sew 6 charm squares together to create a row.  Do this two times.  Then sew the row of 6 to each side of the background fabric as shown in the diagram above.  Press.  Then sew 8 charm squares together to create a row.  Do this two times.  Attach the row of 8 to the top and bottom of the background fabric as shown in the diagram above.  Press.

To create the ‘Ho Ho Ho’ print off this PDF pattern that I created.  Trace it onto the paper side of the HeatnBond Lite three times.  Press the HeatnBond to the wrong side of the fat quarter.  Then cut out the letters.  Arrange the letters in the center of the dresden and press into place.

Stitch the edges of the letters to secure into place.  I used a straight stitch to sew the letters into place.

Now its time to create a quilt sandwich.  Layer your backing, batting and quilt top.  Baste the quilt using SpraynBond Basting Spray.  Quilt as you desire.

Cut 2 1/2″ strips of binding fabric for a total of 4 strips.  Then bind the quilt with the method you prefer.  I chose Moda Grunge for the binding.  This red has a little bit of pink in it which is perfect!  I also picked pink for my backing fabric.  With so many girls in my house, we have lots of pink!

Enjoy your quilt!
