Hello everyone!  Happy Day!  This is Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams here to share with you another fun way you can use the Full of Love Heart Templates from the “Full of Love Heart Pillow” I shared with you earlier this year to create a unique patchwork kite.

Let’s Go Fly a Patchwork Kite Made with HeatnBond®

Adding Hearts to any project!  This tutorial will actually show you that it’s easy to add hearts (or really anything) to your quilted projects by using HeatNBond® fusible to do raw edge applique.

Project Supplies:

  • Patchwork Kite Pattern by Kim Lapacek
    • Fabric/batting requirements found on pattern but I used charms and jelly roll strips from “Just Another Walk in the Woods” from Moda Fabrics to make the kite I’m showing here.
  • 3 or 4 extra charm squares from “Just Another Walk in the Woods” from Moda Fabrics  (you can also use scraps from making the kite)
  • HeatNBond® Lite – 1 sheet
  • Aurifil Thread 2530

Adding Hearts to the Kite:

At this point in the patchwork kite pattern you typically sandwich the pieced top and quilt it.  Now – this is cute and all but how much more adorable would it be with some hearts appliqued to it?  And that’s just one of the reasons I love HeatNBond® Lite  so much.  It’s a great way to raw edge applique to a project without making it crazy stiff like some fusible will.

Print out a copy of the “Full of Love Heart Templates” and lay a sheet of HeatNBond® Lite over it.  The paper side should be facing you, the rough side facing the template.  Trace some hearts … it’s your choice how many you’d like.  You can see here that I did three large hearts and five medium hearts.

Roughly cut out the heart shapes you traced.  Don’t cut right on the lines you drew – you’ll do that later.

On the wrong side of the kite scraps and the extra charm squares, press the rough cut heart shapes down.  Now that they are fused to the one fabric, cut along the lines of the hearts.  place heartsPlace the fused hearts in positions on the kite that look pleasing to you.  Play around with this a bit so you make sure you get everything just how you want it.  Peel the paper off the back of the fused hearts and press to set the hearts in place.aurifil thread

Sandwich the kite top with batting and backing.  Using Aurifil 2530 stitch the edges of the hearts down.
