Here is the final day for the Food For Thought Sew Along.  Amy of Sew Incredibly Crazy here to show you how I put my food blocks into a fun and decorative project.

Something Sweet Placemats

Placemats are always an easy way to decorate your home and add a personal touch.  I personally love the red, white, and blue combinations, so why not try it on these 10 1/2″ blocks.

Supplies:
4 – quilt blocks from the Thermoweb Food For Thought Block series
HeatnBond® High Loft Fusible Fleece
Aurifil 50 wt. thread and 12 wt.
Fat quarters of assorted colors or fabric scraps
Backing fabric
Binding fabric – Cut 6 pieces 2″ x  width of the fabric. (This makes for a smaller more petite binding that works well on placemats.  This is enough strips for 4 placemats.)
Oliso Mini Iron

Something Sweet Instructions For 1 Placemat:

Step 1:  Cut 10 – 2 1/2″ squares from various fat quarters

Step 2:  Sew 5 of the 2 1/2″ fabric square in a row.

Step 3: Repeat with the remaining squares.  Yielding 2 sets of 5 squares.

Step 4:  From one of the fat quarter cut a 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece and a 2 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ piece of fabric.

Step 5:  Sew the 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece of fabric to one of the 5 square strips.

Step 6: Sew the other 5 square strips to the other side of the solid fabric strip.

Step 7:  Sew the unit created in Step 6 to the right side of one of the Food For Thought blocks.

Step 8:  Sew the 2 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ solid fabric strip to the bottom of the unit created in Step 7.

Step 8:  Press the placemat.

Step 9:  Cut a piece of HeatnBond® High Loft Fusible Fleece to 14 1/2″ x 18 1/2″.  This will be slightly large than the placemat.

Step 10:  Using an iron, iron the Fusible Fleece to the back of the placemat.

(This is the newest Oliso Mini Iron.  It is so nice and lightweight, a definite  must in a quilting room.)

Step 10:  Quilt as desired.  After quilting is completed, trim the excess fleece from around the placemat.

This quilting was done with Aurifil 12 wt. thread in white.  The machine was set with longer a stitch length.

Step 11: Bind and Enjoy!!

Repeat Steps 1 – 11 to make as many placemats as you have 10 1/2″ blocks.
