The red, white, and blue is ready to wave for Veteran’s day.  What better way to say thank you than to offer a lap quilt to a soldier for their sacrifice?  Carla here from Creatin’ in the Sticks with a free embroidery and quilt pattern to spark some patriotism.

Print the pattern (it’s been reversed for you) on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of Stitch N Sew medium weight tear away interfacing. It’s so easy to print it right onto the stabilizer with this product.  Just cut the interfacing the size of a sheet of paper, press, and print right on the interfacing.

reversedpattern2

(This is the pattern and if you want to save it as a jpeg and enlarge it to suit your needs feel free to do so.  Just add the 1/4″ seam allowance) The full size pattern is free and available in PDF format in the Creatin’ in the Sticks Craftsy store.

Sew the quilt block:

If you are going to make this block for the following quilt, you will want to cover the entire piece of stabilizer.  Extend the stitching to the edges.  The fabric pieces are large enough to allow this.  The finished block will be 8” x 101/2” for the quilt or 8 1/2″ x 11″ unfinished. Paper piece the block together.  This is a simple block and perfect for beginning paper piecing.  There are great videos on the internet to show the basics.  Give it a try.

Now stitch the embroidery design.  If you like hand stitching, you can trace the design to the front of the fabric.  This design was machine stitched with a triple stitch following the pattern on the back.  No marking!!! Stitching from the back makes it easy to see and super fast.  Land, like flowers, is organic and if you miss a bump or line it’s not very noticeable.  Stitch the entire design, trim excess fabric making block 8 1/2” x 11”, then carefully tear away the stabilizer interfacing.
