Paper Pieced Refrigerator magnets

Looking to add some fun or color to your kitchen? Refrigerator magnets are a great way to add some quilting designs to your kitchen space, without cluttering up counters. There are so many fun paper-pieced designs you can use – here is how to transform them into refrigerator magnets!

sheets for paper piecingHere is what you need to make your own:
Stitch n Sew® EZ Quilt Block Sheets
Paper Piecing Pattern (I used this bottle pattern by Piece of Mind)
Fabric scraps for Paper Piecing
Heat n Bond® Fusible Fleece
Therm o Web Pressing Paper
Adhesive Magnet Sheet

Start by printing off your pattern onto the Stitch n Sew® EZ Quilt Block Sheets. I printed my pattern at 75%, because I wanted a slightly smaller magnet.

print out the paper piecing pattern

The sheets are lovely to print on, and fantastic to work with when foundation piecing. They don’t distort from the steam of the iron, as most foundation papers do, and slip under the presser foot just like fabric would, without the slipping that sometimes happens when using paper. As with all paper piecing (also known as foundation piecing), be sure to shorten your stitch length when sewing.

Once your blocks are complete, you’ll want to quilt them. Fuse Heat n Bond® Fusible Fleece to the back of each.

To ensure you don’t get any of the adhesive onto your iron or ironing board, use the Heat n Bond® pressing paper to protect your work area.

use pressing paper

Don’t quilt your block quite yet. Stitch a 1.5″ strip of fabric all the way around your completed and block, to serve as binding. Don’t worry about pressing it in half, as with normal quilt binding.

Press the excess binding around to the back.

Stitch-in-the-ditch around the block to secure the binding in place, and quilt as desired.

finished quilt blocks

Cut the adhesive magnet slightly smaller than the paper pieced block, and stick into place on the back of each magnet.

put magnet on the back of the block

Your darling kitchen magnets are complete!
